It has been a bit of a tough project, but I am pleased to have completed my choral work. I became bogged down in one of the movements and it eventually became clear that the problem wasn’t the ideas, but the key. I had aimed for a I, II, V, I key structure for the four movements and what was actually required was a I, IV, V, I. I am always amazed how a simple solution is most often the right one when a piece becomes stuck. I once had a poem that wouldn’t cooperate until it finally dawned on me I was writing two at the same time and treating them as one! When I split them apart, I had two excellent results. The moral of this story seems to be if you get stuck, step back and take time out to look for a simple solution; don’t over complicate things!
