Andrew Dalby graduated from the Welsh (now Royal Welsh) College of Music and Drama, Cardiff in 1984 where he studied trumpet with Bob Ferriman, harmony and counterpoint under Tony Lewis, the Kodàly method and conducting under Cecilia Vajda – Founder – British Kodály Academy, composition under Mervyn Burtch, composer, as well as Orf Schulwerk under Caryl Roese at the South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education. After graduating Andrew entered the teaching profession. Now with over 40 years experience behind him, having taught music to all age ranges and abilities both in the classroom and as an instrumental teacher, Andrew is semi-retired and able to devote more time to composition.
Throughout his life Andrew has been an active trumpet and cornet player performing in orchestras and bands including York Symphony Orchestra www.yso.org.uk, the Academy of St Olaves Chamber Orchestra https://www.academyofstolaves.org.uk/, the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra http://www.clevelandchamberorchestra.co.uk. as well as the Yorkshire Imperial Band and various other local brass and big bands. He also has had a long career conducting both brass bands and choirs, and founded the now well established Thirsk RBL Band – Home Page (weebly.com) in 1985.
Andrew, along with his wife Claire, returned in 2019 from 8 years living a nomadic life aboard their sailing boat off the Scottish and Northern Irish coasts during which he spent his time writing and studying. Now safely ashore, Andrew has returned to his musical life and is focusing more on composition, orchestral playing, singing in Easingwold Singers (Home | Easingwold Singer), a very well established and accomplished local choir and occasionally playing the organ at Thirsk Methodist Church. In his spare time Andrew plays bass guitar in a rock band, writes songs which he performs using a Paul Reed Smith guitar and a Boss RC30 loop station and he seeks every opportunity to be with his grandchildren.
