What a week this has been. After a short delay whilst my young pupils get used to being in secondary school I have returned to a little bit of teaching alongside my childcare duties looking after my baby grandson. I marvel at Bach with all his children and wonder how he ever managed to write a note, but then again the women in his life were probably stay at home mums and he most likely did little of the domestic chores. Any of my musicologist friends might have evidence to the contrary, but I think it is true to say that behind every successful man is the support of a good woman. How many of them sacrificed their own careers I wonder, and the potential loss is something we can never know. It is good that, albeit slowly, we are beginning to see more women coming to prominence in the music industry, especially in conducting and composition.
