I had the privilege of attending a rehearsal this week in which a piece I’d written a number of years ago for that band was being rehearsed for a programme today, the day of this post. This made me begin to think about the piece in question, and another one I wrote more recently also…

Hi everyone. There is not a lot to report this week as I am (mostly) on holiday. I did manage to make a little progress on the third movement of my work in progress alongside practising for a couple of gigs I have coming up over the bank holiday weekend. Have a great end of…

I don’t know about you, but I am usually a ‘glass half full’ type of person. Optimism, and being grateful for what you have is better, in my opinion, than focusing on, and being miserable about, what you don’t have, because that way you don’t appreciate what you have been blessed with. Well, today I…

Many years ago when I was a classroom teacher the summer holidays were a strange time because thoughts were already turning to Christmas and planning for the long autumn term. I thought I had put that behind me when I changed to instrumental teaching, but during the course of this last week I have found…

What a week it has been out and about performing at a friends leaving party, playing with the town band at the local Agricultural Show and Gymkhana, and being generally busy with practising and rehearsing. I have also been preoccupied with matters non-musical, but that goes with the territory when you are a church steward…

I played a charity gig with my rock band I.N.C.A. last weekend at the Deanery in Ripon in support of a campaign to save some local trees from destruction, tonight I’m playing solo using my looper at a party to bid farewell to our Methodist Minister who is relocating to pastures new. Tomorrow I’m playing…

After all the excitement last week of the concert playing the Planets Suite I have had a week of other musical things distracting me from the business of writing and arranging music. I have to say that this is not all bad because I’ve been invited to play trumpet in Mahler’s 1st symphony in October,…

It has been a funny old week in the office with a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and I seem to have arrived at Friday again sooner than expected! Outside of the demands publishing and writing place on me, I also teach, but the summer holiday is looming and a…

This week has caught me out, what with stuff going on outside the office and of course the General Election. I didn’t stay up all night, but I did get up at 3am in time to hear back to back declarations for Islington and Clacton! What with all that excitement and a lean week in…

I have had a piece outlined for a while and have been doing research to help structure the work in order to have a framework within which to begin composing. A blank piece of manuscript and a pencil is rarely sufficient for successful composition, there needs to be some sort of design brief. I find…
