On this page you will find information about Andrew Dalby’s published music and links to his books. Where audio examples are provided they are mostly computer generated sounds or crude live recordings from rehearsals, so they serve to merely give a general impression of the piece. Please also note that this is not an online shop, so if you would like to buy any of my brass music please go to www.juneemersonwindmusic.com or ask your local music retailer to obtain copies for you. String Quartet in D Major is a conventional piece rooted firmly in traditional tonal harmony, follows a conventional 4 movement structure and is scored for 2 violins, viola and cello. The whole work is based on a very simple theme stated in unison in the opening bars as a rising half scale (Soh Lah Tee Doh). As the piece develops this scale motif reappears in different forms in each of the parts and is passed from player to player. For all of its simplicity and charm, this work is very playable for musicians of intermediate ability and above and has plenty of audience appeal making it a useful addition to any ensemble’s programme.

This work for Brass Band is a “crescendo” built on a ground bass which begins quietly and gradually builds to a key change and climax. As the piece progresses three melodies are introduced which eventually combine together to create counterpoint while the accompaniment is passed from one section of the band to another to achieve timbral variety. All this is driven along by a steady rock ballad rhythm in the percussion resulting in a crowd pleasing programme filler suitable for bands of all abilities.

Following the time honoured tradition of naming marches after places, Andrew Dalby named this concert march after the cliff top hill in the North York Moors National Park where the famous Kilburn White Horse overlooks the Vale of York. Like the eponymous countryside, this march is both challenging and spectacularly beautiful giving ambitious bands a piece that will appeal to players and thrill traditional brass band audiences.
